Tour description

The hilly countryside between Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammer is known as the balcony of Upper Bavaria, due to the great view of the Alps from here.

We set off on our hike from Lake Starnberg, or more precisely from Tutzing station. We climb up to a ridge, the lkahöhe, from where, weather permitting, you have a great panorama.

Walking across fields and meadows, we reach the picturesque village of Machtlfing and then we carry on to Weiler Kerschlach. Here we can buy fruit and drinks at a farm-shop. On a small hill nearby we will have a rest under a tree.

On we go through a varied mixed woodland. To our right there is the so-called May moor, a large nature reserve. Later we reach a footpath with a view of Lake Ammer.

We approach the Andechs monastery from the South through the village of Erling. The Benedictine monks here are known for being business-minded and they brew a good beer. All around the monastery which is situated on a hill, there are lots of possibilities to have a picnic or eat out.

You can also visit the baroque church and the crypt, and maybe also climb up the tower.

Eventually we meet up to make our way back.; we follow a small stream, the Kienbach, down to Herrsching. If the weather plays ball and people are up for it, we can go swimming in the Lake Ammer.

We take the local train back to Munich.
