Tour description

The Obere Wettersteinspitze is the easterly peak of the mountain range, Wettersteinsgebirge and is excellent for views. You can see not only the other peaks of the Wettersteinsgebirge and the Karwendel mountains but also the ice-covered peaks of the main ridge of the Alps. From the summit, the lake Ferchensee, far below looks inviting for a swim.

After a train ride of approx 2 hours, we reach Markt Mittenwald. We cross the picturesque centre of the town and soon reach the trail into the valley, Lainbachtal. We walk up past a waterfall to the lake, the Lautersee and carry on further to the saddle in the direction of the lake, Ferchensee. Our track turns off here and carries on into the woods. The trees already become sparser at a height of 1260m. We reach the cliff-face across a scree-slope and climb the cliff using a path secured with ropes. Soon we have a rest at our last water-stop.

After that we reach a rough cliff, from where our track winds up through the steep hang to the green Gamsanger saddle. From here we climb through a rocky gap (I) and scree to the summit.

After a decent rest on the summit, we descend through the forest using the same route. But then we climb directly down to a place for a swim at the lake, the Ferchensee.

While enjoying the refreshing swim we can gaze up to the cliff walls of the Karwendel mountains and the Wettersteinwand and "our" cross on the summit.

After swimming we hike about one hour back to Mittenwald.
