Tennis: Newcomer displace Favorites    01/08/2004 10:51 am

Because of the high amount of participants at the tennis tournament of the EuroGames everything came out a bit different then expected. The favorites had to fight the strong EuroGames newbies.

The tennis tournament of the EuroGames had a very big amount of participants coming to Munich. Also the beautiful weather helped to have a smooth event. With happy sunshine and warm temperatures they played on 57 tennis fields in one of the biggest facilities in Germany, Keferloh, at the same time without any breaks.

Because of the tight repertoire players used their short breaks to make international contacts and enjoyed their time on the big terrace.

The tennis tournament ran different then expected:
For surprise the higher nominated players droped out in the early rounds. The reason for that is, that many lesbians and gays participate the EuroGames for the first time.

The organisation of the tournament made the participants play 200 matches at the first day, Thursday, 29th July, so that all players could be at the opening ceremony in the Olympic Hall. On Friday they even played 300 matches. After all, in these first 2 days of this 3 day tournament everyone had great fun and enjoyed themselves.

There was a big confusion, when Martina Navratilova was supposed to come to the info desk. Participants took it for real, not knowing, that it was the nick name of the chief in charge Manfred.

The organisers are curious looking forward to the rest of the matches today. On schedule are the half-finals, single-finals, double and mixed.
